What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. There's no plastic card to insert. You scan a QR code, and your phone connects to our network in under a minute.
It's essentially a SIM card you download for your trip.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Most phones made from 2018 onwards do. Here's how to check:
On iPhone: go to Settings › General › About, then scroll to the bottom. If you see "Available" next to an IMEI number, your phone supports eSIM.
On Android: open your phone dialer and type *#06#. If you see an "EID" number, your phone supports eSIM.
Most likely compatible:
- iPhone XS and newer
- Google Pixel 3 and newer
- Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer
- Recent iPad Pro, Air, and Mini models
Not sure about your model? Send us a quick email at hello@wificandy.ie. We usually reply within a few hours.
Is my phone unlocked?
Your phone needs to be carrier-unlocked for our eSIM to work.
How to check:
- iPhone: Settings › General › About, then look for "Carrier Lock". It should say "No SIM restrictions".
- Android: Settings › Connections › Mobile Networks.
If you bought your phone outright from Apple, Samsung, Best Buy, or Amazon, it's almost certainly unlocked.
If you bought it on a US carrier plan (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile), a quick call to your carrier will usually unlock it for free.
Why choose an eSIM instead of a SIM card at the airport?
Three reasons our customers love it:
- Delivered instantly by email. No airport queues, no wasted time.
- Keep your home number active. Your regular SIM still handles calls and texts. The eSIM just gives you data.
- Set it up before you fly. The moment you land, you're online.
How do I install my eSIM?
Three steps:
- Buy online. We email you a QR code within minutes.
- Scan the QR code with your phone's camera, or go to Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM.
- Activate on arrival by turning on data roaming for the eSIM line.
When does my plan start?
Your plan starts when you activate the eSIM, which usually means the moment you first connect to a network on arrival. Not when you purchase.
Feel free to buy weeks ahead. You won't use any data until activation.
Can I install it before I fly?
Yes, and we recommend it. Install the eSIM at home while you have WiFi, then simply switch it on when you land. It saves you from dealing with QR codes at the airport.
Can I make calls or send texts?
Our eSIM plans give you data only, but in practice that covers everything you need:
- Calls: use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, or any app you already use with friends and family.
- Texts: iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, they all work.
- Everything else: maps, streaming, browsing, all fine.
Your home SIM stays active for traditional calls on your usual number.
Can I share my eSIM data as a hotspot?
Yes, hotspot tethering works on all our plans. Just keep in mind that sharing uses data faster than personal use.
Traveling with family or a group and need data on multiple devices all day? Our Portable WiFi may be a better fit.
My eSIM isn't connecting. What should I do?
Run through these quick checks:
- Data roaming is ON for the eSIM line (Settings › Cellular › [eSIM] › Data Roaming)
- Restart your phone
- You're inside the coverage area (Ireland, UK, or EU)
- You haven't used up your data allowance
If none of that works, email hello@wificandy.ie with your order number. We'll get you back online quickly.
Can I get a refund?
- Before installation (QR code not scanned): Full refund
- After installation, service works fine: No refund
- After installation, service fails on our end: Full refund
Email hello@wificandy.ie and we'll handle it.
I accidentally deleted my eSIM. Can I get it back?
If you haven't activated it yet, email us and we'll reissue the QR code.
If you've already activated it, the eSIM cannot be restored once deleted. You'd need to purchase a new plan.
Tip: leave the eSIM installed on your phone until your trip is completely over, even if you disable it.
When should I remove the eSIM from my phone?
Only after your trip is finished and you're sure you won't need it again. Once deleted, it's gone for good.
Many travelers keep it on their phone (disabled) for a few weeks after returning home, just in case.
